The Piano Technicians Guild

The Piano Technicians Guild is a non-profit association of piano tuners and technicians with members throughout the United States and Canada. The PTG is the only organization providing standardized testing of piano tuners. As such the PTG has two main functions:

• to provide educational opportunities for professional piano technicians

• to conduct an examinations program to qualify tuners as Registered Piano Technicians

In nearly every trade or profession — lawyer, doctor, plumber, electrician, barber … even dog groomer — a license is required before an individual is permitted to offer services to the public. But this is not the case with piano tuning. Currently no state requires licensing of piano tuners. The question then becomes, absent a licensing process, how can the piano owner be assured of competent piano service?

When you hire a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) to service your piano, you can rest assured that the person who shows up at your door has demonstrated their skills to their peers and has met or exceeded the competency standards established by the Guild.
