W hat do you do for a living? When someone asks
you, what do you say? Are you a piano tuner, technician, rebuilder?
All of these classifications definitely fall into the music industry.
They provide services (sometimes things such as pianos) that support
people in their piano playing/teaching endeavors. Just think of how
much music simply would not happen if it weren't for the services of
piano technicians. Think about that for awhile and you will understand
that the services piano technicians provide are extremely important
to our ongoing musical culture.
When I was working for Goucher College some years ago, the Chair of
the Music Dept said to me one day: "You know, this Department would
not function without you" (meaning my services). We tend to see ourselves
doing individual jobs. These jobs add up to something greater. So enjoy
your well earned and important status as an essential person in the
ongoing musical life of your community!
