Do you have a plan for your professional future as a piano technician? What kind of jobs do you want to take? How much money do you plan to make? What equipment do you need? Who is going to assist you along this path? Are there new things you need to learn in order to arrive where you wish to be? When do you want to arrive at this new plateau? The list of questions could go on and on.

Here are a couple of examples.
1. You are a generalist piano tuner-technician with a small shop for action regulation and repair. You would like to be earning $100,000 net by 2011. You are currently earning $60,000 net. What do you have to do to make this happen? How much will you need to charge? How many, and what type of jobs will you need to do? How will you advertise? How will you monitor your progress? Etc.
2. You are a generalist at present but would like to expand into piano restoration so that you make half your income from shop work. This goal carries with it even more questions. How big is the shop? Where is it located? What equipment do you need? What skills do you need to acquire? Where will you get the clients/pianos? How do you continue to make a good living while making these changes? Etc.

If you are not where you want to be professionally, get started making a business plan to take you where you want to go. And don’t forget to have fun along the way!!
